Abstract

Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are fundamental for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as outlined by the United Nations in the Agenda for Sustainable Development. This paper explores the significance of gender equality and empowerment in the pursuit of sustainable development. It examines key challenges, current progress, and strategic approaches to fostering gender equality, particularly in the context of the ongoing global efforts. The paper highlights how gender equality serves as both a goal in itself (SDG 5) and a catalyst for achieving other SDGs such as eradicating poverty, ensuring good health and well-being, promoting decent work, and achieving environmental sustainability. The discussion also covers the critical role of policy, societal norms, and international cooperation in driving gender-responsive action and sustainable development.
