Electrochemical biosensors utilizing salivary biomarkers are gaining momentum as non-invasive diagnostic platforms. Advances in nanomaterials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, and hybrid nanocomposites have revolutionized sensor performance, enhancing sensitivity, selectivity, and miniaturization. Saliva, as a rich reservoir of metabolites, proteins, and nucleic acids, offers a promising alternative to blood-based diagnostics while supporting continuous and painless monitoring.
This paper explores recent innovations in nanomaterials applied to salivary electrochemical biosensors. It reviews the unique properties of emerging nanostructures, fabrication strategies, clinical applications, and wireless integration. A critical assessment of challenges—including biocompatibility, reproducibility, and ethical considerations—is provided. The discussion highlights how nanotechnology is reshaping salivary diagnostics for real-time, point-of-care health monitoring.
